Menelusuri titik temu antara rekaman lensa dan rekaman musik melalui visual mixtape
Spektrum warna yang mampu ditangkap oleh indra penglihatan tidak hanya memperkaya pengalaman sehari-hari, tetapi juga berpotensi melahirkan interpretasi. Dari banyaknya rentang gelombang cahaya tersebut, sebagian warna dipercaya mampu mewakili kondisi atau suasana tertentu dalam pemikiran dan pengalaman manusia. Dua di antaranya adalah biru dan hitam. Warna biru identik dengan perasaan pilu dan sendu, sementara warna hitam dipahami sebagai representasi atas sesuatu yang tidak menyenangkan, kelam, hingga mencekam. Kedua pernyataan tersebut bisa dianggap sebagai interpretasi yang umum. Setiap kebudayaan memiliki kompleksitas interpretasi spektrum warna yang berbeda satu sama lain.
Aditya DP merupakan seorang seniman yang menelusuri kedalaman biru dan narasi hitam. Melalui dua seri karya bertajuk Depth of Blue dan Noir Narration, Aditya mengolah sebuah metode olah visual melalui sensibilitas indra pendengaran. Metode ini ia sebut sebagai visual mixtape. Karya-karya fotografi dalam seri Depth of Blue dan Noir Narration tidak dapat dipisahkan dari susunan lagu yang menginspirasinya. Susunan lagu yang terdiri atas ragam rilisan musik spesifik yang tersedia di platform-platform siaran musik hari ini. Dalam proses penciptaan karyanya, Aditya tidak hanya mengolah medium fotografi melalui susunan lagu yang ia buat, tetapi ia juga menjelajahi upaya pengajuan lisensi dari setiap rilisan musik yang ia libatkan. Upaya yang disebutkan terakhir memperkaya sekaligus memberi definisi atas metode visual mixtape.
Saling terkait dan diposisikan sejajar satu sama lain (vis-à-vis), Depth of Blue dan Noir Narration dihadirkan dalam dua bentuk presentasi yang menawarkan pengalaman mencerap yang berbeda. Kedua seri dipresentasikan dalam format cetak-pindai di dinding ruang pamer dan dalam format buku. Dalam Depth of Blue yang terdiri atas 36 karya fotografi dan 6 rilisan musik, Aditya menelusuri perasaan dan pikiran-pikiran terdalamnya. Warna-warna lembut serta ruang imajinasi yang terkesan lapang dan terbuka menjadi penanda-penanda yang dominan dalam merepresentasikan kesenduan sang seniman. Sementara itu, Noir Narration yang mencakup jumlah rilisan musik yang sama dengan Depth of Blue tetapi dengan jumlah karya fotografi yang berbeda (56 karya), menawarkan nuansa yang lebih spekulatif dan cenderung misterius. Menarasikan nuansa samar-suram melalui polaritas hitam dan putih, Noir Narration menghadirkan tantangan psikis yang intens.
Secara bentuk, Depth of Blue diselesaikan Aditya pada tahun 2016, sementara Noir Narration tiga tahun setelahnya. Namun, melalui pemahaman metode visual mixtape yang ia ajukan, kedua seri karya baru bisa dianggap selesai pada tahun 2021 setelah keseluruhan proses lisensi diselesaikan. Pameran tunggal Aditya DP yang mengangkat tajuk Vis-à-vis merupakan upaya sang seniman untuk menyelami keselarasan sekaligus kontradiksi pengalaman dan pemikirannya dengan menerobos batas-batas presentasi dan lintas indrawi.
Noir Narration
Dim, sullen, and haunting. Like walking through a room with broken floors, wearing ragged clothes, listening to beguiling dissonant sounds while witnessing beautiful pictures in black and white. Through Noir Narration, Aditya DP finds his interest in developing a series of pictures while listening to his dark and intriguing mixtape. Not only is he picking up specific songs in his taste, but he is also pursuing the legal obligation to include the songs in his photo series. A photographer in the midst of a hazy atmosphere, searching and finding an interestingly different approach in artmaking.
By calling it a ‘visual mixtape,’ Aditya redefines the relationship between visual artwork and music. Six series of pictures through six different songs. Noir Narration encompasses the depiction of mysterious figures to the non-representational bright white compositions. From Bright Eyes to Bring Me the Horizon, the musically-driven photographer brings out his snapshots into the grim reality of life. Noir Narration is a well-crafted and well-managed artistic pursuit. The artist has to go through a complicated process of finding agreements with each song’s representatives before publishing his artworks. Is it supposed to be the requirement of publishing a visual mixtape in the future? Or is it a new kind of collaborative process between visual artist and musician?
Behind the obscure visualization of Noir Narration, there is a clear idea of how Aditya DP finds himself in the contemporary artworld.
Depth of Blue
Visualizing a certain kind of feeling through layers of artistic processes. Aditya DP determined to dig deep into the ocean of music releases just to pick six specific songs in which he considered representative to develop his artistic endeavor entitled Depth of Blue. From soft color, vast and open, dreamy imagination and visualization combined with the openness of Sigur Ros’ alluring sound to Radiohead and SEATBELTS diving into the abyss paired with darker and more complex visual compositions, Depth of Blue invited both the seers and listeners to enter Aditya’s deepest oblivion.
It is a challenge to try to put Aditya’s ‘visual mixtape’ into a specific artistic method in contemporary art. Depth of Blue is not just a visual interpretation of the artist mixtape. It is a willingness to develop a new kind of approach in the world of interdisciplinary art. From the process of composing the preexisting music releases, pursuing the legal rights and agreement from each individual or group involved in the mixtape, to then trigger the idea of connecting the sound of the music with snapshots and visual composition. Each series of artworks is bound with each composition of music in the mixtape.
Depth of Blue is a path to appreciate the complexity of Aditya Dwi Putra method in developing his early artistic tendency. A step towards understanding the beautiful yet gloomy world of ‘feeling blue.’
