Nature, or in a broader scale, the universe, is a phenomenon which always been a fascination to human. Not only because we lived in it, but also about nature’s behavior and development which trigger us to think. Even for most of us, natural phenomenon often attributed to the sign of the greatness or the very existence of God. Regardless of its relation to both religion and science, nature is a place as well as phenomenon rich in the value of beauty.

Emilie Monty is a young artist from Australia who’s attracted to the beauty of nature explained above. Through her works, a mix between collage and drawings, Emilie is not only imagining the beauty of nature (Earth and the extraterrestrial) but also thinking about humankind (who lived in it, the realm of natural world) developing over the time to create another realm, the virtual realm. Technological developments have encouraged human to continually strive to create a better world. Better for the collective and also the individual. The current gadget technology has at least encouraged the emergence of ‘small worlds’ created by human individuals. Notice how the activities of each individual in social media platform such as Instagram. Each individual is freed and seemed to kind of ‘competes’ to show his own ‘nature’ made from his image projection.

Through the exhibition entitled I Am Here, Emilie Monty tries to combine the imagination of nature, the universe, to the realm of virtual world, as well as questioning the developments of human behavior in the 21^st Century. As a part of residency program as a result of a cooperation with ACICIS (The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies), this exhibition is one of SemAta Gallery efforts to bridge the public with the contemporary artworld. The process of Emilie’s artmaking which was done with a series of collaborative and educative activities, is hoped to ‘melt down’ the assumption of the artworld as a world of individual or exclusive.

Alam, atau lebih luas lagi, alam semesta, merupakan sebuah fenomena yang selalu menjadi daya tarik bagi manusia. Bukan hanya karena manusia tinggal di dalamnya, tetapi juga bagaimana perilaku dan perkembangan alam yang tidak henti-hentinya membuat manusia berpikir. Bahkan, bagi banyak manusia, fenomena alam seringkali dikaitkan dengan tanda-tanda kebesaran ataupun keberadaan Tuhan. Terlepas dari kaitannya dengan ranah agama maupun sains, alam merupakan sebuah tempat sekaligus fenomena yang kaya akan nilai keindahan.

Emilie Monty merupakan salah seorang seniman muda asal Australia yang tertarik dengan keindahan alam di atas. Melalui karya-karya hasil percampuran antara kolase dan drawing-nya, Emilie tidak hanya berimajinasi soal keindahan alam (baik di Bumi hingga alam semesta atau luar angkasa), tetapi juga bagaimana manusia (yang hidup di dalamnya) berkembang menciptakan alam lain, dalam hal ini alam virtual. Perkembangan teknologi telah mendorong manusia untuk terus menerus berupaya menciptakan dunia yang lebih baik. Lebih baik secara kolektif hingga individual. Teknologi gawai saat ini sedikitnya telah mendorong hadirnya ‘alam-alam kecil’ yang diciptakan oleh individu-individu manusia. Perhatikan bagaimana aktivitas setiap individu manusia dalam platform media sosial seperti Instagram. Setiap individu dibebaskan dan seolah ‘berlomba’ menunjukkan ‘alam’ hasil proyeksi imaji dirinya.

Melalui pameran bertajuk I Am Here, Emilie Monty berupaya untuk menggabungkan imajinasi alam, alam semesta, hingga alam virtual, sekaligus juga mempertanyakan perkembangan perilaku manusia di Abad ke-21. Sebagai bagian dari program residensi hasil kerjasama dengan ACICIS (The Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies), pameran ini merupakan salah satu upaya SemAta Gallery untuk menjembatani masyarakat umum dengan medan seni kontemporer. Proses berkarya Emilie yang dilakukan melalui rangkaian aktivitas kolaboratif dan edukatif diharapkan dapat ‘mencairkan’ anggapan bahwa berkesenian selalu bersifat individual ataupun eksklusif.
